In May 2003, Algeria was hit by the most devastating earthquake in two decades. Registering at 6.8 on the Richter scale, the quake's epicenter was about 45 miles east of the capital Algiers.
The earthquake killed more than 2,000 people and left around 200,000 homeless. The country was also hit by a series of aftershocks over the weeks following the main earthquake. ShelterBox sent 101 boxes to the region via the Red Crescent Agency as part of a massive international aid effort.
