In May 2009, thousands of people were left homeless after fleeing from fighting between the Pakistani army and militants in the north west of Pakistan. The UN estimated that 2.4 million people were displaced because of the conflict. ShelterBox Response Team (SRT) member Mark Pearson was deployed in the country to oversee the distribution of 362 ShelterBoxes, 250 heavy duty tents, 380 ‘family kits’ of essential equipment and to assess the need for further aid.
By the end of May 250 additional boxes were sent to help the situation and ShelterBox set up a camp called 'Taraki Camp' in the Swabi district to provide shelter for 2,500 people. This camp was expecting to double in size over the following 2 weeks.
