Flooding and volcanic activity

In October 2006 an eruption by Mount Tavurvur sent up an 18km-high plume of ash that rained down across the northern tip of the island of New Britain.

The eruption led to around 2,000 people fleeing from the provincial capital and surrounding communities. The government of Papua New Guinea declared a state of emergency and appealed for help in resettling those removed from their homes.  Working with local Rotary clubs, ShelterBox sent a response team and 100 boxes. The tents they contained were used to provide accommodation for those families unable to return to their homes.
