The UN reported that an estimated 150,000 people were displaced as a result of the civil war being fought in Sri Lanka. After initial assessments it was decided that ShelterBoxes were needed in the region. In May 2009, 224 prepositioned boxes were sent from Dubai and 224 from Singapore. These prepositioned bases allowed ShelterBox to respond to the disaster quickly. In June it was decided that further aid was necessary and another 200 boxes were sent to the region from ShelterBox HQ in Cornwall, UK.
ShelterBox currently has a ShelterBox Response Team in the country, overseeing the deployment of the boxes and assessing the need for further aid.
