Families Like Zara’s Are Searching for Safety
When violence swept through her community in Sudan, Zara fled with her children after witnessing loved ones being killed.
“We fled because of the war. We saw our loved ones killed, and we fled to take refuge in Chad.”
Their journey was long and dangerous. They traveled for days, waited at crowded transit sites to be registered, and eventually reached a refugee camp where thousands live in fragile shelters made from sticks, fabric, or plastic sheeting. Families walk miles for water, children cannot attend school, and women have limited opportunities to earn income.
ShelterBox teams met Zara in the camp, where she shared how drastically life had changed. Before the conflict, her children attended school, and her family lived in peace. Now, she is raising them alone, struggling to provide even basic necessities.
Despite everything she has endured, Zara speaks with strength and hope.
“I advise women like me to have patience and courage for a better future, for themselves and their children.”
When asked what she wants for the future, her answer was simple:
“To live in peace with my children here in Chad and for there to be peace in Sudan too.”
